HOMA BAY, Kenya — October 28, 2026

A 15-year-old Grade 6 learner from Rangwe, Homa Bay County, is sitting her Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) examinations from her hospital bed after giving birth to a baby boy just hours before the national assessments began.

The candidate was admitted to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital on Friday evening after going into labour. She delivered the baby through a Caesarean section on Sunday night, shortly before the examinations started on Monday, October 26.

Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Vincent Oduor confirmed that both the learner and her newborn were in stable condition.

Despite recovering from surgery, the young candidate has been allowed to sit her examinations at the hospital under the supervision of Ministry of Education officials and healthcare personnel.

The arrangement enables her to continue with the national assessment while receiving the medical attention she needs.

Hospital Makes Special Arrangements for the Candidate

According to hospital officials, the learner is taking the examinations at the health facility as she recuperates from childbirth.

Education officials and health workers are supervising the process to ensure she can complete the assessment without having to leave the hospital.

Meanwhile, nurses at the hospital’s newborn unit are taking care of her baby as she sits the examinations.

The arrangements highlight how education officials can work with healthcare providers to help candidates facing medical emergencies participate in national assessments.

Both Mother and Baby Reported Stable

Dr Oduor said the learner had undergone a Caesarean section and that both she and her newborn were in stable condition.

The mother remains under medical care while the baby is being looked after by nurses in the newborn unit.

The decision to administer the examination in hospital allows the candidate to continue with her education-related responsibilities while prioritising her recovery and the baby’s wellbeing.

Thousands of Learners Sitting KPSEA in Homa Bay

The Grade 6 learner is among 40,821 candidates registered to sit KPSEA across Homa Bay County.

The 2026 national assessments began on Monday, October 26, with candidates across Kenya undertaking examinations under arrangements coordinated by the Kenya National Examinations Council and the Ministry of Education.

KPSEA assesses learners at the end of Grade 6 under Kenya’s Competency-Based Education system.

The assessment helps inform the understanding of learners’ progress as they prepare to continue to the next stage of their education.

The Grade 6 examinations are scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, October 28.

A Reminder of the Challenges Facing Young Learners

The case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by adolescent learners who experience pregnancy while still in school.

Such situations can create serious health, emotional and educational challenges, particularly when a learner must balance recovery, childcare and the continuation of education.

Access to healthcare, psychosocial support and opportunities to remain in school can play an important role in helping young mothers continue learning.

The circumstances surrounding the learner’s pregnancy have not been detailed in the reports, and no assumptions should be made about how it occurred.

The immediate priority remains the health and welfare of the mother and her newborn, alongside ensuring that she can complete her assessment under appropriate supervision.

Education Officials Facilitate Her Examination

Allowing the candidate to sit KPSEA in hospital provides a way for her to participate in the national assessment while receiving treatment.

The case also demonstrates the importance of flexibility and coordination between education and healthcare teams when candidates face unexpected medical circumstances during examination periods.

As the examinations continue, the learner’s situation stands out as an example of the practical challenges that can arise when health emergencies coincide with important school assessments.
