NAIROBI, Kenya — October 28, 2026
Former Citizen TV news anchor Yvonne Okwara has been appointed Head of Investments and Partnerships at Shuga Global, marking a new chapter in her career barely a day after announcing her departure from journalism.
Shuga Global announced the appointment on Wednesday, October 28, saying Okwara would help strengthen strategic partnerships, attract investment and mobilise resources to support programmes targeting young people.
The appointment follows Okwara’s announcement on Tuesday that she was bringing her two-decade career in broadcast journalism to an end.
Her move into the organisation’s leadership comes as Shuga Global undertakes a rebranding exercise and seeks to expand its international presence.
What Will Yvonne Okwara Do at Shuga Global?
In her new position, Okwara will be responsible for building strategic relationships, identifying investment opportunities and securing resources to support the organisation’s programmes.
Shuga Global said her background in business, public policy and social impact would help it establish partnerships and improve its long-term financial sustainability.
The organisation is also seeking to reduce its reliance on traditional grant funding by expanding its funding sources and developing partnerships that can support its work.
Shuga Global described Okwara as an experienced communications professional whose expertise extends beyond television journalism to corporate communications, fundraising and government relations.
Okwara Exits Journalism After Two Decades
Okwara became one of Kenya’s familiar television news personalities during her time at Citizen TV, where she presented news, conducted political interviews and moderated discussions on national affairs.
She developed a reputation for direct questioning and in-depth engagement with political leaders and other public figures.
Her departure marked the end of a 20-year journey in broadcast journalism, according to Citizen Digital.
The new appointment shifts her professional focus from reporting and analysing public affairs to building partnerships and mobilising resources for development initiatives.
Shuga Global Seeks Wider International Reach
Okwara joins Shuga Global at a time when the organisation is repositioning itself for growth and seeking to strengthen the financial support behind its programmes for young people.
Her responsibilities will include helping the organisation establish strategic relationships and secure funding to sustain its work.
The appointment also highlights how experience gained in journalism, communications and public affairs can translate into leadership roles in other sectors.
For Okwara, the move represents a significant professional transition after two decades in the newsroom.
